Anne West, Ancestress of Castleward

Anne West – Daughter of Captain Richard West

Anne West married firstly in or before 1630, Edward Smith, who was the eldest son of Captain Anthony Smith, Constable of the Moyray, County Armagh.  They had two sons; Richard and James.  Edward died in August 1634 and Anne remarried, to Bernard Ward of Castleward before February 1638, and from this marriage, was the ancestress of Viscount Bangor and the families of Castleward and Bangor Castle.

The eldest son of Anne West and Bernard Ward - Nicholas - married Sarah, daughter of Theophilus Buckworth, Bishop of Dromore (1613-1652), by his wife Sarah, daughter of Arland Ussher.  (Nicholas’ wife Sarah Buckworth was a Niece of the Most Reverend & Right Honourable James Ussher who discovered the long-lost Book of Kells and donated it to Trinity College, Dublin, which was founded by his Uncle the Most Reverend Henry Ussher).

Anne and Bernard's daughter Mary married her cousin, Tichbourne West of Ashwood, County Wexford (son of Major Roger West, mentioned above) and by him had numerous issue.  It was a descendant of this marriage that ultimately succeeded to the Ballydugan estate.

Bernard and Anne Ward's (nee West) descendants and name-sakes, Bernard Ward, 1st Viscount Bangor and Lady Anne Ward, built the famous Castleward House in the 18th century, with its double facades.
